What does CODE COACH do?

CODE COACH is a 21st century tool used to access and understand the Residential Building Codes. It appears to be a standard set of residential plans with 14 major plan sheets and 12 secondary plan sheets. Every piece of text on the sheets is a link to a code section. Think of where something should be on the set of residential plans and that is where your code information should be. All you have to do is click on the text in that location.

CODE COACH also supplies you with clarifying information that is attached to various code paragraphs. CODE COACH has many useful tools, such as, the ability to e-mail code passages without leaving the program, the ability to see the locale factors that modify the code without leaving the section you're viewing, the ability to look up self referenced passages without leaving the section you're viewing, bookmarks, and the ability to store and access project data.

What does CODE COACH contain?

CODE COACH contains the 2000, the 2003, and the 2006 International Residential Codes. It contains state amendments for all states shown and all of the customized portions for the custom state codes such as North Carolina, Florida, and others. At present code coach only contains the states available on the pop up menu that is part of the registration form. New states will be added as soon as possible. CODE COACH also contains clarifying information that has been used in the DeWalt series of Residential Building Code Manuals. Unfortunately CODE COACH cannot answer any zoning or local use questions. It is presently designed to answer questions about residential construction but not about local government.

Can CODE COACH tell me what the Residential Building Codes are in my city or county or other local jurisdiction?

Code Coach can only tell you what the code is on a state level. Local jurisdictions are impossible to monitor. However, Code Coach contains a utility to help find out where the local jurisdictions differ from the state codes. When creating a project in CODE COACH, there is a checkbox that if checked, that will automatically send an e-mail to the building official or the local jurisdiction whose e-mail address was input into the project. This e-mail will ask for any differences in the codes from the local jurisdiction and those of the state. It will ask that this information to e-mailed to you, or a link emailed to you showing you where you can procure such information. Most local jurisdictions have a minimal amount of amendments. The overwhelming bulk of information on your project is contained in Code Coach.

Will I be able to understand CODE COACH?

We've worked very hard to create a product which can be understood by all. The main requirement is that you have an idea of what a set of residential plans looks like and how they work. You do not have to be an expert in reading plans. It is visually biased and you should be able to find your way when looking for information. Definitions from the ICC are available on all of the sheet pages. Clarifying information is available on much of the information. Clarifying information is also visual in nature and it is excellent for explaining more difficult passages. If you are presently working in residential construction,  or are contemplating building or modifying a house, you should be able use this product with ease.

How accurate is CODE COACH?

CODE COACH contains all of the base codes, all of the individual state amendments, and all of the custom codes that we can presently access. The wide variety of legislative processes involved in creating, distributing, and enforcing these codes are extremely complex, inadequately organized, and misunderstood. Therefore, we believe that we have produced the most accurate database available for such information, there is always the possibility of minor inaccuracies. If problems arise from such inaccuracies, you're encouraged to use CODE COACH'S e-mail facility and its number search ability to converse with your local building department on what is the proper course of action.

What is the code in my area and what does the code mean?

This one is simple - the code in your area is what your building official and his building department says it is. The code means what your building official and his building department says  it does. Given these concepts, you can still work with your officials on interpretations and actions through an increased knowledge of what the state says that the code should be. Where a problem becomes crucial, it is recommended that you seek the counsel of a good structural engineer. CODE COACH will enable you to talk knowledgeably with all of these people and produce a safe, useful structure economically

How often is CODE COACH updated?

CODE COACH is updated as rapidly as possible after Clarity Technologies LLC becomes aware of code changes.
